Seven Unavoidable Errors In The Printing Industry

May 17 , 2021
For professionals who have been engaged in printing for a long time, some printing errors are objectively existing and unavoidable; but for customers who receive printed materials and play a decisive role in the acceptance of finished products, sometimes they do not fully understand these errors. As a result, after a dispute arises, it is very difficult for both parties to communicate.

So here we briefly introduce the objective errors in printing, hoping to ease the contradiction between Party A and Party B. These errors include the following seven factors.

1. Text errors in typesetting:

Typesetting production is an important process before printing. To be precise, typesetting is a text layout work performed by the design and production staff using corresponding software under the instruction and request of the customer. Therefore, from the perspective of printing houses, customers are generally required to sign and confirm before plate making and printing. But sometimes due to the tight schedule of the job, and based on the trust of both parties, sometimes the customer may completely delegate the right of typesetting confirmation to the printing plant. In this case, once a problem occurs, the customer may blame the designer for irresponsibility, such as typos or other typographical errors.

It should be said that the occurrence of this kind of error is not caused by the mechanical problems we mentioned above, but is entirely due to problems with process control. Therefore, we generally require the customer's signature to confirm before the film is produced for proofing. These errors can be reduced or eliminated to a large extent through mutual comparison between the two parties. But even so, in fact, there may still be some errors in the manuscript confirmed by the client.

In this regard, we recommend learning from the practices of certain multinational companies. They generally follow rigorous principles behind the important prints they produce, stating "This information is for reference only, and the company will not be liable for any errors in the prints." Liability" to eliminate joint and several liability caused by typographical errors.

2. Errors in production and proofing:

After the design and production staff complete the typesetting and production work, they enter the publishing process, which is what we usually call proofing. Generally speaking, the output precision of the laser imagesetter is in the range of 0.01-0.1 mm. At the same time, due to the difference of the film used, it will also cause a certain error.

The most direct manifestation of this error is that in the four films (black, red, yellow, and blue), if a certain film (such as a black plate) has a problem and needs to be patched, the film output is different and the resolution is different. The rate may be different (not in the same batch of films), which leads to changes in dots. The patched film may be inaccurate with the previous three films. Therefore, it is important to make one-time forming during the production of the patch, and minimize the number of patches. Of course, garbled characters or font changes due to font replacement during film production can be avoided if the relevant personnel are responsible.

After the film (film) is made, traditional analog proofing requires a set of four films for proofing. When proofing, to achieve the accuracy and stability of the four-color ink proofs, three links must be controlled and standardized, namely equipment, materials and quality standards. On the equipment, it is necessary to adjust the pressure of the proofing machine, the temperature of the plate and the air cushion blanket to ensure that the proofing machine is in the best working condition; in terms of materials, the ink of the same brand and the same series should be used standardly, and the four colors of different brands should be used. Ink will cause the proofs to be different from the characteristic files in the scanner, which will directly affect the accuracy of color correction.

In addition, the paper should be regulated. In principle, the same paper should be used for proofing and printing; in terms of quality standards, attention should be paid to the solid density value and the relative contrast value of printing. If these factors are not taken into account when proofing, it will cause errors in printed products compared with proofing.

3. Color error:

There are three kinds of color errors. The first is the color deviation between the printed matter and the proofing; the second is the inconsistency between the front and back colors of the same batch of printed matter to a certain extent; the third is the deviation between the printed product color in the printed matter and the actual color itself. The first difference is that we usually say that the printing cannot catch up with the proofing. The reasons have been discussed above, such as ink problems, paper problems, and dot reduction problems.

For this kind of difference, the printer should try to trace the sample, if the difference is large, the customer should be notified in time, and the customer personally signs the sample. The second kind of difference is also an objective problem that the printing machinery itself has been difficult to solve. We know that in the printing process of the printing machine, the ink inking is a dynamic balance process. During printing, when the ink on the ink roller is reduced to a certain extent, the printer will automatically inked to compensate. The "a certain degree" here will directly cause the color deviation between the first printed product of a batch of printing jobs and the final printed product. The third difference is actually a problem of psychological expectations.

In this case, we generally consider the color of the product picture first, then the color of other pictures, and finally the decorative color bars or color blocks. For the printed samples for ordering, we often suggest that customers add an article at the bottom of the printed matter: "The colors in this printed matter are for reference only, and the colors are subject to the actual product" to avoid unnecessary disputes.

4. Paper error:

Due to the papermaking process, the brightness, thickness and texture of the same paper produced by different paper manufacturers will vary. For example, the copperplate paper of the same weight produced by Zixing, Daewoo and Jindong has different textures, and of course the differences are not too big. Another example is Asia Pacific offset paper. The fineness and whiteness of the paper is better than other domestic manufacturers, but the price is also about 50% higher.

In addition, the same gram of paper produced by the same manufacturer may have slight changes in the production process due to the difference in the delivery time, plus acceptable errors and other reasons, and the brightness, thickness, and texture are also different. In fact, in the labels of each batch of paper purchased by the printing plant, the paper mill has made such a statement in advance, requiring that it cannot be mixed with the previous paper, so as to avoid deviations when users compare. For printing houses, they should provide customers with paper samples of the printed products to be used before each printing, which will be printed after confirmation by the customer to avoid such disputes.

5. Printing machinery error:

The error of printing machinery is reflected in two points. One is the overprinting accuracy problem, and the other is the ink color problem. We know that color printing is actually four-color overprinting, that is, the four colors of red, yellow, blue, and black are superimposed together, and the content of overprinting is reflected on the film, which is the dots we mentioned earlier. In layman's terms, it is one by one. Little dots.

According to my country's printing machinery industry standards, the registration accuracy of the printing machine, that is, the overlay accuracy of the dots, is required to be 0.033mm. The actual mechanical accuracy is generally higher than this standard, mostly 0.01mm, of course, some printing machinery is 0.1mm ( Mostly monochrome machines). But even so, if you use a 40-fold magnifying glass to observe the printed product, you can still see that the dot overlap has deviated. Therefore, in the process of handover of printed products, we can only reach the point where there is no problem with the naked eye. Unless the printed product is a rare treasure of a thousand years, it is impossible for the printing factory to accept the practice of customers picking up faults with a magnifying glass.

For the ink color problem, due to the ink volume compensation of the inking device, there is also a certain deviation.

6. Cutting size error:

After the printing is completed, the next important step is to use a paper cutter to cut the printed product. When cutting the finished product, due to the error of the cutter itself, the error after cutting the finished product is also objective.

In fact, according to relevant national standards, in RMB printed products, the error range of cut size is 0.5 mm, and the error range of securities printed products is 1 mm. In other words, the size of RMB and tradable securities are not exactly the same, but the error must fall within a certain range. For general printed matter, the size error of cutting is more than 2 mm from top to bottom.

7. Psychological expectations error:

To be precise, the psychological expectation error should not fall into the category of printing error we are discussing. The reason for mentioning this problem is that in the process of interacting with customers, this problem is a problem that we often encounter, are difficult to solve, and have to face. For customers who have been in contact with printed matter for a long time, after long-term accumulation of experience and knowledge, they have the insight into which errors are acceptable and which are unacceptable, and it is easier to communicate with printing houses.

And some customers may have very high psychological expectations when making printed matter, hoping to make the printed matter beautiful. For these customers, printing houses have to take on the task of educating and training the market and communicate more with customers. After all, printed matter is printed matter, not artwork.
